Emanuela Palmares Accepts Nomination for State Representative in Danbury’s 110th District

Danbury, CT- Emanuela Palmares, 32, was nominated to be the Republican candidate for State Representative in Danbury’s 110th District, facing 12-term incumbent Democrat and Deputy House Speaker Bob Godfrey. She is the first Brazilian-American to run for statewide office.

“Voters in the 110th District can choose between a candidate in office for almost three decades who is a leader in the Democrat majority that let Danbury public schools be underfunded by $30 million, and a candidate who is connected to the community, reflects its rich diversity and understands the reality of the people who live in the district,” she said.

“Danbury is one of the most diverse cities in the state, and I’m proud to be part of its vibrant immigrant community,” Palmares said. More than 45 percent of the 110th District’s population is Latino, nearly 35 percent is foreign born, almost 50 percent are women, and almost 20% are children, she said.

The Brazilian-American immigrant activist and mother of a special-needs child, Palmares has been what she describes as “an engaged community member” active in community and state-wide public and not-for-profit organizations. They range from a domestic violence victim’s advocate at the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury to the Danbury High School Governance Board to a volunteer translator at the AmeriCares to the Danbury Hospital board of directors.

She is the first Brazilian-American on the state’s Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission, has served in a state government task force to enhance emergency and non-emergency communications between the state and residents whose primary language is not English, and on the Language Acquisition and Educational Equity Workgroup that studied educational outcomes of English Language Learners in CT.

Palmares is editor of the family-owned Tribuna, a bi-weekly newspaper in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Her “most meaningful position of all” is being mother to her son, and “the proud daughter of my role models, parents Celia Bacelar and Genilson Palmares.
